The call came unexpectedly. It was my mother. She was in a panic about the need to clean year's worth of dirt off the windows on her house. ""I love ll the views,"" she said, ""but I don't want to spend the whole ay cleaning windows."" No problem, I told her. In ""Name that Tune"" fashion, I told her how she could clean windows with not five, not four, but only three window-cleaning tools -- and do it faster than she ever thought possible. ""This, I want to hear,"" she said.

Too often, window cleaning turns into a dreaded chore. That's because until now we've cleaned with everything from old shirts, discarded towels, newspaper, and pallets of paper towels. If that's what I had to work with, I'd board up my windows. But, clean windows aren't out of your reach.
The problem with windows is that we think we need gallons of specially formulated window spray to get them clean. After only ten minutes of spraying and pumping, you'll wind up with kung-fu grip and a huge bill for all that spray. But with a small investment in a car window sponge and squeegee cleaning stick, some ammonia, and a few microfiber cloths, you can clean your windows in no time.
Microfiber is my absolute, hands-down favorite cleaning cloth - for everything. Whether it's dusting, cleaning shiny surfaces like granite, glass-topped cooking surfaces, or polishing stainless, nothing cleans as well as microfiber. Look for microfiber cleaning cloths in the automotive sections of dollar stores, megamarts, or variety stores. These cloths will leave your windows completely streak-free and won't deposit lint on them or give you blackened hands like newspaper does. Simply put, if you don't use microfiber, you'll wipe those windows until your arm wants to fall off, leaving you feeling like the Venus di Milo.

A whole bottle of ammonia costs about a dollar and will make gallons of cleaner, making it an economical choice. Or, you can do what I do and simply add a quarter cup of sudsy ammonia to a gallon bucket of water. (Sudsy ammonia has a little bit of detergent that helps make the dirt come off easier.) Put in your squeegee and get the sponge wet with the ammonia water. Scrub the windows with the sponge, squeegee off the excess water, and polish dry with a microfiber cloth. Bada bing, bada boom, you're done.
Ah, that's great for the outside windows, but what about the inside windows, you ask? Dampen a microfiber cloth with your ammonia water and wring it out. Wipe the inside windows with the wet cloth and follow with the dry cloth. Voila! You're finished again in nothing flat.
The phone rings. It's Mom, singing my name. Her arms are still moveable she's happy to report, and her hands aren't in a frozen death grip from all the squirting of window cleaner and she's finished with the inside and outside windows in under two hours. Now that's a job well done and done, well, fast. Every carpenter will tell you that any job is easier when you have the right tools - and that's true for window cleaning too.

"Streak Free Windows Without Chemical Cleaners"
Do you have a problem with getting your windows clean and streak free? Have you ever washed your windows thinking you had them sparkling clean; only to discover, that when the sun came around, they were still streaked. I have lots of times, till I found microfiber cloths and towels. Other tips I have used before microfiber towels are:
Using newspapers to dry the windows with, but that left you with carbon on your hands from the print on the paper
Using some vinegar in the water helps to cut dirt and grime
Wiping the inside of the windows in one direction and the outside in the opposite direction. This helped me to know which side I had to redo.
Another trick my mom used to use (on her windows that would get coated with road grime) was to wash her front porch windows with oven cleaner. It was the only way she could get them clean. She lived on a heavily traveled state highway, with lots of trucks and farm traffic. So that left her windows with lots of oil, dirt and exhaust residue on them. But my favorite tip was when I discovered microfiber towels and cloths to wash and dry my windows with.
What microfiber towels I like best to use:
I use a wet suede microfiber towel to wash my windows with and a dry waffle weave towel to dry with. You could also use one 16"" x 16"" microfiber terry towel to wash with and one or more 16"" x 16"" terry microfiber towels to dry with, depending on how many windows you need to wash. One 20"" x 40"" waffle weave will dry numerous windows with just this one towel, because of its special built in ""pockets"" that whisk the moisture away, first into the pocket and then deep into the fabric of the towel, leaving your window dry and streak free. I have heard people tell me they just wash and let air dry.
How the microfiber towel works:
The unique technology of the microfiber blend, gives you a towel that is soft, durable, dirt grabbing and absorbent. The microfiber blend is made up of polyester and polyamide (nylon). The polyester gives it its softness, and the polyamide gives it its absorbency. The ""star"" wedges gives it its scrubbing ability, with it's thousands of surface edges. This technology allows the fibers to pick up the dirt and pull it into the towel not just pushing it ahead of itself.
I use hot water to wash my windows with. Rinsing your microfiber towel in hot water causes the fibers to swell, thus forcing the dirt, oil and grime out of the fibers into to your water. Rinse your rag frequently, to keep it clean. Dirty rags can also cause streaking of your windows. Just using hot water and microfiber towels helps to save you money, eliminating window cleaner and paper towels.

Launder your cloths in hot water if they are especially dirty, microfiber loves hot water. Dry on low heat in the dryer or line dry. Use regular detergent, no bleach or fabric softener. If the microfiber cloths are getting stiff, they may not be clean, or they have been dried at too high of heat; try soaking them in hot water, detergent and OxiClean (a non-bleach stain remover) for ½ hour to help loosen and remove dirt deep within the fibers.

According to one study, microfiber cloths pick up 96% of bacteria using only water. With houses becoming more and more air tight, cleaning with water makes sense because if you're able to clean with fewer chemicals, then those chemicals won't be trapped in the house with you. A university in Canada performed a study that tested the cloths' cleaning ability in restrooms and found that microfiber with water cleaned as well as a rag with disinfectant.
Special surfaces need microfiber
Microfiber cloths also beautifully polish chrome, fixtures, windows, wood floors, and granite. That's right, granite; beautiful to look at and awful to maintain. If anyone had told me how hard keeping that shiny surface would be, I doubt I would have installed it in my own house. But then I use microfiber and it helps me maintain my love affair with my granite.
I'll never forget the look on my builder's face when he asked me if I thought granite was a chore to maintain. I then proceeded to show a side by side comparison of the cleaning ability of a sponge and a microfiber cloth. I enjoyed his amazement at the incredible cleaning ability, and I think I sold another set of towels that day.
The same is true for those glass cooktops that require the special ""cooktop cleaner."" Fortunately, microfiber is there. With a damp cloth, you can make your ceran or glass cooktop sparkle without all the special cleaner and paper towels every single time you want to clean it. It does a great job on stainless, too.

"The Best (And Easiest) Way To Wash Windows"
Has it already been a year since you washed your windows? Or longer even? Understandable. This is not one of life's most looked-forward to chores. If you've vowed this is the season you're tackling the windows, here's the best way to get them sparkling clean inside and out.
Obviously, the easiest way to wash your windows is to hire someone else do it. If that's not possible, this is the method I've found that's fastest, most cost-effective, and leaves them virtually streak free.
First, get the proper tools. You'll need a bucket, a squeegee, several sponges, several microfiber cloths, a chalkboard eraser (seriously), a fluffy, mop-type applicator, and window cleaner. It's also nice to have a steam cleaner and a hose-type vacuum cleaner, but they're not absolutely necessary. You'll note I didn't include glass cleaner or paper towels on this list.
When you go to the hardware store, there will be lots and lots of squeegees to choose from. Get one that's about 12-15 inches wide, preferably with a metal handle. If you have windows that are high you may want to invest in a pole that will fit onto the end of the squeegee and extend your reach from ground level. A word of caution, don't use a bathroom shower squeegee. They're not made to do this job.
You'll need something to mop the sudsy water onto your window surfaces. That's where the ""fluffy, mop-type applicator"" comes in. I was actually lucky to find a two-sided squeegee that has the rubber squeegee on one side and a moppish applicator on the other side. Saves so much time to have a two-in-one tool! If you can't find that, any kind of soft applicator will work. Look in the car wash aisles, there are sudsing applicators there as well.
This is not a commercial, but the best window cleaner I've found is a concentrated liquid soap made by Ettore. This stuff is so good that I've washed all the windows in two houses and only used about half of the 16-ounce bottle. Oooh-la-la...that's the kind of bargain product I like. (By the way, I've also used this same cleaner on my granite counter tops. It left them mirror-shiny). If you want to make your own window cleaner here's a good formula: Mix together two quarts of warm water, � cup of ammonia, one pint of rubbing alcohol, or vinegar, and a tablespoon of liquid dish detergent.
I use a steam cleaner to steam down the window, the frame and screen first. It loosens up the dirt and grime so I don't spend so much time scrubbing. It's always best to take your screens off and hose them down separately, but steaming them clean is a close second. Next I go over everything with my trusty vacuum cleaner hose. It's not so yucky picking up the dead bugs that somehow find their final resting place between the screen and the inside of the window when you use a vacuum. If you don't have a hose-type vacuum cleaner you can use a wet rag or damp paper towel.I'm going to assume you all are lucky enough to have double hung windows that tilt out for easy cleaning. I know not everyone does, in which case you'll have to clean first on the inside, then take your materials to the outside of the house and repeat the process. Sorry, it's the only way to do it.
For double hung windows I always do the outside of the top window first, then the inside of the top window, then the outside of the bottom window followed by the inside of the bottom window. It's good to have a system, so you don't lose track of where you are.

Now, take your squeegee and starting in the top left corner make a steady and firm swipe horizontally across the window. Now take one of your many microfiber cloths and wipe down your squeegee blade. Slightly overlap that swipe and make parallel swipes (cleaning your squeegee after each swipe), until you've gone over the whole window. Now completely dry your squeegee with a microfiber cloth and make a couple of figure 8 motions across the surface. Finally take a new and dry microfiber cloth and wipe up any drips. Repeat that process until your windows are clean and dry. Now, as a finishing touch, polish the inside of your windows with a clean and dry chalkboard eraser. This step helps remove any lingering streaks. Believe me, it works!
Refresh your cleaning liquid every couple of windows. You can't get clean windows using dirty solution no matter how hard you scrub. Also, it's important to use nearly dry microfiber cloths. I've found we go through about 10 to 15 of these miracle workers when we're doing windows in a typical home.
Voila! That's it! Now you can sit back for at least another six months, relax and enjoy the view.

Gently squeeze some of the excess water from it. Starting at one end, gently rub the soapy cloth back and forth the upper railing, moving along a few rungs at a time. Remove all dirt and algae discoloration. Dunk and lightly wring out the soapy cloth, cleaning all sides of the vertical railing slats. Complete each section by finally doing the bottom railing. If the front porch is large and the soap begins to dry, hose off each section before it does. After all sections are complete, remove any standing water from the porch with a squeegee or a mop. Dry off the railings with a clean, dry lint-free cloth.

o You can eliminate having to use stainless steel cleaners for your stainless steel appliances, by cleaning them with a microfiber dish cloth. Just wet the cloth, wipe and walk away.
